General Information

In order to make studying a success, the Social Counseling Service offers a specific counseling service with a focus on studying with disabilities or chronic diseases.

The general conditions for students with disabilities or chronic diseases at the universities in Leipzig can vary greatly. We therefore recommend that prospective students find out about the local conditions at an early stage and contact the social counseling service of Studentenwerk Leipzig. Upon request, contacts to counselling centers, offices and self-help groups can be arranged.

Especially through the use of a volunteer, students can be offered hourly support in their daily study routine. Many things are possible: Reading aloud, taking notes, accompanying students on campus, to the libraries, to the Mensa, on their way through the city, etc.

All counselling services are subject to confidentiality. If you wish, we can advise you anonymously. We strive to make our counselling sessions as barrier-free as possible. You can help us by informing us of any support requirements (e.g. communication aids) for the consultation by e-mail.

The open telephone consultation time takes place without an appointment. A consultation lasts a maximum of 20 minutes and serves to provide an initial overview of your concerns. You can reach us in the telephone consultation time +49 1761 9659 669 (Mr. Aike Dägling) as follows:

  • Tuesday 10:00 a.m. -12:00 noon

For individual counselling, a personal appointment is made in advance, which usually lasts 50 minutes. The consultation can take place in the following ways: 

  • by telephone
  • by video consultation via Big Blue Button
  • or in person on site (depending on the infection situation and on request)

This regular round table is open to students from all Leipzig universities who feel they belong to the target group of students with chronic illnesses and/or impairments. It is intended to be used to get in contact with each other, to exchange information and to inform each other.

  • Hardship funds for students

    • Students suffering from an acute or temporary financial emergency through no fault of their own have, as a rule, the opportunity to apply for financial aid once during their studies. The financial support can be applied for as a interest-free loan without guarantee or as a grant.

  • Mensa children's card and children's plate

    • Studentenwerk Leipzig support students with children by means of the Mensa children’s card. This card entitles children of students of Leipzig’s universities, starting from the 1st birthday until they reach the age of 10, to receive one free warm meal per day and per child at the student restaurants run by Studentenwerk Leipzig.

  • Participation in cultural or sporting events 

    • KulturLeben Leipzig & Region has been enabling people with particularly low incomes to participate in the cultural life in Leipzig and the surrounding area free of charge. The Social Counselling Service is social partner of the project and provides support for the application.

  • "Freitisch" voucher
    • Students facing a financial hardship they are not responsible for can apply for a "Freitisch" voucher at the Social Counselling service. This voucher is added to the current student card or Mensa card. With the help of the voucher meals and beverages can be purchased in the Studentenwerk's Mensas and Cafeterias.​​​​

We are your competent contact persons for questions on the following topics:

  • Study organization (e.g. Leave of absence, part-time studies)
  • Compensation for disadvantages
  • Applying for special needs (e.g. integration assistance, care services, additional needs)
  • Applying for the determination of the degree of impairment
  • Search for barrier-free living space
  • Financing studies
  • Access to studies (orientation and referral advice)
  • Communication with authorities, health insurance companies, landlords (e.g. advice on the application process and legal options, dealing with arrears)
  • Working while studying
  • Orientation on changes in study status and effects on study financing (e.g. leave of absence, exmatriculation due to family requirements, chronic disease, transition from study to work)
  • Health insurance (e.g. access, differences between statutory and private health insurance, orientation in the health care system)
  • Examination of possible claims to social benefits (prerequisites, information on the application procedure, e.g. for housing allowance, child benefit, Umemployment Benefit ("Arbeitslosengeld II")
  • Counseling and orientation in difficult life situations (information about specific offers of the universities, municipal institutions and counseling centers in Leipzig, e.g. in case of doubts about studies or planned withdrawal from studies) 
  • Advice on financial aid from the Hardship Fund of Studentenwerk Leipzig (to bridge a financial emergency)
